Getting it working, and what it keeps

• Which languages does TalkFlip support?

  Russian, Spanish and English. In Settings → Languages you can choose whether Spanish follows Spain, Mexico or the United States.

• How do I get it working offline?

  Open Settings → Languages & downloads and download Russian, Spanish and English. iOS fetches the translation languages and speech assets from Apple once; after that, TalkFlip works in Airplane Mode.

• Why does automatic language need a separate download?

  Apple's speech recognizer listens in the language you choose, so on its own it needs you to tap who is speaking. To tell the language by itself, TalkFlip uses NVIDIA's Parakeet speech model, which is about 483 MB — too large to ship inside the app.

  Download it in Languages & downloads when you want it; it comes from Hugging Face, and only when you tap Download. Once it is on your iPhone it runs offline like the rest of the app. Until then, Apple's recognizer is used.

• Does TalkFlip hear anything when I'm not using it?

  No. The microphone is used only while a Conversation or Listen session is running. The one exception is the experimental “Keep listening when the screen locks” setting, which is off unless you turn it on: it lets Listen keep running with the screen locked, and the microphone indicator stays on the whole time.

  Audio is never saved.

• Where is my history stored, and how do I delete it?

  History is off by default. If you turn on Save conversation text in Settings → History, the text of each session is kept only on your iPhone, with iOS file protection, and is not synced to iCloud. You choose whether it is kept for a week, a month or forever.

  Swipe a session in History to delete it, or use Delete all history in Settings → History to remove everything. Deleting the app deletes all of it, including Favorites.

• Does TalkFlip send anything to you?

  No. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no server of ours. Speech recognition, translation and voices run on your iPhone using Apple's on-device frameworks.
